Nationalism and Patriotism - Demarcating the differences

नमस्ते सदा वत्सले मातृभूमे त्वया हिन्दुभूमे सुखं वर्धितोहम्

Patriotism and Nationalism are the two sides of coins that cannot exist individually but yes simultaneously these attributes brings miraculous strengthening support to any nation. The finest difference between the two is important to know this helps in structuring the country pace of progress and sustaining its rich heritage and culture.

Defination of Patriotism :-
Patriotism is an emotional attachment to a nation which an individual recognizes as their homeland. This attachment, also known as national feeling or national pride, can be viewed in terms of different features relating to one's own nation, including ethnic, cultural, political or historical aspects.

Defination of Nationalism :-
Nationalism is oriented towards the development and maintenance of a common communal identity based on shared characteristics typically including culture, language, religion, political goals and/or a belief in a common ancestry.

Indeed, population of India encapsulates with ample of patriotism on national festivals like independence day, republic day or any statehood day. While cricket match especially if against Pakistan, people recite Vande Mataram with full of enthusiasm and valour. True Patriotism of Indians unboxes when Indians pay taxes, casts vote, helps in sustaining the democracy, stay informed and do not spread fake news, developing the civic etiquettes to evolve the Bharat as a developed nation, budding the ecosystem of helping community, flora and fauna. Patriotism is utmost important though to be developed among the citizens of nation. Whereas Nationalism comes into picture when some sincere event in favour or against any specific power takes place like civil disobedience movement started by Gandhi ji, Salt Satyagraha, Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyan, Make in India movement, globalisation, capitalisation of PSU, Quick India Movement, Abrogation of article 370 etc

Patriotism encompasses devotion to the country as a whole – including all the people who live within it. Nationalism refers to devotion to only one group of people over all others. By 'patriotism' we mean devotion to a particular place and a particular way of life, which one believes to be the best in the world but has no wish to force upon other people. Patriotism is of its nature defensive, both militarily and culturally. Nationalism, on the other hand, is inseparable from the desire for power.Basically, if a group of people has a shared sense of nationalism, they form a “nation.” The idea of nationalism believes that once a group has defined itself as a nation they have a “natural right” to territory necessary to live in and govern in.

The one more difference between patriotism and nationalism is that the patriot is proud of his country for what it does , and the nationalist is proud of his country no matter what it does ; the first attitude creates a feeling of responsibility while the second a feeling of blind arrogance that leads to a war.

Nationalism stresses unity and integrity based on a cultural background, including language, religion and heritage. Patriotism, rooted in the love for a nation, emphasises values and beliefs.

Patriotism, predates the concept of nationhood. It's about the land and the people we live with and emotionally and intellectually identify with.

Nationalism, which easily lends itself as a tool to rally people or rouse the rabble, has got enmeshed with ideologies like communism and fascism.

Patriotism is to defend your particular patch of land against invasion, theft or bullying from other patches of land, neighbouring or not.Nationalism is the idea that your patch of land is so special that it deserves to be put above the others when they have any kind of relationship. One degree above nationalism is mild imperialism. Chauvinism is nationalism that becomes impolite to foreigners. Fascism is nationalism that becomes murderous to all at home who disagree.

A patriot says: I’m proud of my country.
A Nationalist says: My country is better than your country.

Nationalism (my country, right or wrong) has developed a strong negative connotation. Patriotism is free from this stigma.
