Webbing the dreams of many and making India proud
“I am ecstatic to win a gold medal for my country in the World Archery Para Series. I won this medal for India due to the hard work of my coach and myself,” said Payal after her remarkable achievement on the international stage.
Kuldeep, who lost his mother at the tender age of five, rose above personal tragedy to become a distinguished para-archery coach. Today, he is a guiding force for countless athletes, especially those battling financial hardship or physical disabilities, helping them rediscover hope and purpose through sport.
Born in the remote village of Dhanaura Tikri in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district, Kuldeep’s early life was marked by struggle. A major turning point came when he joined the Indian Army, where he was introduced to archery under the mentorship of Colonel Mohan.
While pursuing his own journey in the sport, Kuldeep discovered a deeper calling to identify and nurture hidden talent from the grassroots. Choosing unconventional training grounds like village lanes and orphanages, he began shaping raw talent into champions.
Over the years, he has trained more than 500 archers, many from underprivileged backgrounds and with disabilities. Among his most extraordinary success stories is Payal Nag.
The Story of Odisha’s Payal Nag
Once living in an orphanage in Odisha's Bolangir, she had lost all four limbs due to an electric shock and had no exposure to archery. Kuldeep introduced her to the sport, even motivating her by showing videos of Sheetal Devi, another inspirational archer.
Under his guidance, Payal transformed her life, eventually becoming a world champion by clinching gold at the World Archery Para Series.
Kuldeep’s impact goes far beyond a single success story. His mentorship also contributed to Harvinder Singh winning India’s first-ever Paralympic medal in archery. He also played a crucial role in training Sheetal Devi, an archer without hands, helping her rise to global prominence.
A Coach with a Huge Mission!
More than just a coach, Kuldeep is on a mission. He travels from village to village, identifying hidden talent and bringing children from the streets and orphanages into the sporting world. For many, he is not just a mentor but a lifeline, offering them a chance to dream and succeed.
In recognition of his extraordinary contribution to sports, Kuldeep has been honoured with the prestigious Arjuna Award twice within a span of two years.
From personal loss to producing world champions, Kuldeep’s journey is a powerful testament to resilience, dedication, and the transformative power of sport - a legacy now shining bright through Payal Nag’s golden success.
"Earlier, in a national competition, Payal had won two gold medals. It's a matter of pride for any coach that two among his wards are representing the country in the international level. Payal from Odisha has won gold medal in the World Archery Para Series by beating my another student," said Payal's coach, Kuldeep Kumar Vedwan.
"I always tell Payal that she is more able than the abled. With this kind of mindset, Payal has won the gold medal," he added.
